Green building techniques have typically been applied to new construction projects, but the potential for creating green, healthy environments in existing low-income multifamily housing is significant. Whether it is an acquisition/rehab project or rehabbing an aging property in your existing portfolio, green rehabs present many challenges. For this reason, Bay Area LISC and Build It Green developed the Green Rehabilitation of Multifamily Rental Properties: A Resource Guide.
The Green Guide for Rehab is a new publication designed to help affordable housing owners and their consultants integrate green building and energy efficiency into the upgrades of their multifamily properties. The Green Guide for Rehab explains the technologies and shows the opportunities for existing properties to ˜go green". The guide is designed to be used in tandem with an energy audit, building walkthrough, or site assessment that occurs at the outset of any rehabilitation project.
The June Green Affordable Housing Coalition brown bag featured an overview of the new Green Guide for Rehab tool as well as pre and post green rehab case studies including detailed information on energy efficiency upgrades. Speakers presented practical information on how to integrate green building and energy efficiency into the rehabilitation of existing multifamily properties.
