GreenPoint Rated - Your Community Partner in Sustainability

Local governments in California can count on GreenPoint Rated's recognizable, trustworthy seal of approval, for help in achieving your community's sustainability goals. The program raises residents' awareness about green building issues and rewards builders who create healthier, more environmentally friendly homes in your community. Whether your local government already has a formal green building program, is considering starting one, or just wants a source of reliable, local green building expertise, GreenPoint Rated can support your efforts.

GreenPoint Rated is program of Build It Green. We help local governments create healthier, more environmentally sustainable communities by providing a comprehensive suite of green building tools and services, including the GreenPoint Rated program. A voluntary program, GreenPoint Rated reflects construction practices that exceed California's building and energy code requirements. It was developed with extensive input from California builders, local governments, state agencies and other key stakeholders.

GreenPoint Rated is designed to complement green building education and incentive programs that local governments may already have in place. Build It Green supports local governments in tailoring GreenPoint Rated to local needs and provides two levels of participation for local governments:

• Consumer education partner: With support from Build It Green, local government agencies participate in educating residents about green building and the promoting the use of GreenPoint Rated. Local governments may choose to offer incentives such as expedited permitting to encourage builder participation in GreenPoint Rated. GreenPoint Rated homes in the community are labeled through Build It Green. Local governments can recommend optional Innovation credits that address high-priority local environmental issues.
• Implementation partner: Supported by Build It Green, local government agencies participate in educating residents about green building and promoting the use of GreenPoint Rated. Local governments may offer incentives such as expedited permitting to encourage builder participation in GreenPoint Rated and may elect to handle GreenPoint Rated verification activities. The local government and Build It Green jointly develop protocols for coordinating program administration and project tracking. GreenPoint Rated homes may be jointly labeled through the local government and Build It Green.
