Course Prerequisites & Certification Eligibility
GreenPoint Rater - New Home Training
The GreenPoint Rater - New Home Training is open to all California building professionals interested in adding green ratings to their portfolio of service offerings. To earn GreenPoint Rater certification, you need to meet the following requirements:
1. Complete the GreenPoint Rater Training and pass the comprehensive examinations, including the field test
2. Hold one of the following current licenses, degrees, or certifications in good standing:
- Certificate to perform Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) ratings through CHEERS, CalCERTS, CBPCA, or other approved provider
- Engineer or Architect License (California)
- International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector certification
- General Contractor's License (California)
- California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) or American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) certification
- California Office of Real Estate Appraisers (OREA) Real Estate Appraiser Residential License or better (AL, AR, AG)
- California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA) training certificate
- California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC) Energy Analyst certification
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification
- Other comparable license, degree, or certification or four years mastery level experience in residential construction (provide letter of verification)subject to Oversight Committee review.
3. Have completed one of the following training programs and achieved their associated certification or accreditation:
- Build It Green's Certified Green Building Professional (CGBP) Program
- Sonoma State University, School of Extended Education, Green Building Professional Certificate Program
- U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation
- Other comparable certification or accreditation, subject to Oversight Committee review
The Rater Certification is valid for two years. Recertification is required to keep certification current.
GreenPoint Rater - Existing Home Training
The GreenPoint Rater - Existing Home training is open to selected Certified GreenPoint Raters who are interested in adding green ratings of existing homes to their portfolio of service offerings. To earn GreenPoint Rater - Existing Home (GPR - EH) certification, you need to meet each the following requirements, and complete the Certified GreenPoint Rater Existing Home application.
1. Be a current Certified GreenPoint Rater in good standing
2. Provide documentation of one of the following credentials showing building experience:
- Licensed General Contractor
- Licensed Architect or Engineer
- International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector certification
- General Contractor's License (California)
- California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) or American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) certification
- Four years mastery level experience in residential construction (provide letter of verification)
3. Hold one of the following current certifications in good standing and show experience in performing testing procedures for:
- Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) ratings through CHEERS, CalCERTS, CBPCA, or other approved provider
- California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA) training certificate
- CHEERS Existing Home Program.
Petition for Participation
In addition to the knowledge demonstrated through successful completion of Certified GreenPoint Rater New Home training, the Existing Home training requires prior experience with home performance testing and building science, as well as working knowledge of construction and experience with vintage features. If you feel you have this experience but have not completed one of the above certifications, you may petition to Build It Green to gain entrance into the Existing Home training. To petition, please attach a one page summary of your work and training experience in this field.
