CGBP Certification & Attendance Information:

Attendance at each day of the training and a passing grade on the final exam are mandatory to earn a Certified Green Building Professional certificate. Participants who miss a session must attend a make-up session at a future CGBP training (within 12 months) before they can take the final exam and become certified. Build It Green is not responsible for following up with anyone who has missed a training session. It is the responsibility of the participant to contact Build It Green to reschedule a makeup session.

A final exam on all four modules will occur on the last day of the training. The 1-hour CGBP exam is included in the fee of the course and is given on the second day at 4:00 p.m. Successful completion of the CGBP training and exam will qualify the student as a CGBP and will be valid for two years.

If an attendee does not receive a passing grade (80%) on the final exam, they have the option to re-take the exam at the end of a future CGBP training session for a fee of $50.00.

Topic: Insulation

Description: Insulation is the least understood and most unappreciated component of our buildings. Yet - in the face of all the other energy efficiency options and in a "return on investment" analysis - insulation is the most important component and variable in making our buildings safe, healthy, comfortable and durable - and able to operate at the lowest cost possible. The profile of Insulation suffers from the adage "out of sight - out of mind!" Yet when the right insulation material is placed in the proper location, with the appropriate thickness, via the correct installation guidelines, it can make a huge difference in the ability of a building to protect its occupants from the vagarities of the external environment.

The presentation on insulation will explain how insulation works, and present a series of case histories revealing the issues and considerations involved in installing an effective insulation barrier in homes and buildings. The great aspect of insulation is that we can "fix it" - if it is not right. Via analysis tools of IR cameras and visual inspection - insulation failures and problems can be pinpointed and diagnosed. And new materials and installation procedures can retroactively fix what is wrong with the insulation in our ceilings, attics, walls and floors. Applying the right insulation "fixes" in our current buildings, and doing it right in the first place as we build new structures, will be one of the biggest challenges - and well as the biggest opportunity - of our new and growing effort to achieve energy efficiency and safe, comfortable healthy and durable buildings. .

Earth2Tech - Building Green Homes Breaks into the Mainstream in NOrthern Cali

Green buildings are still far from typical across the U.S., but signs are mounting that mainstream homebuilders are starting to take energy efficiency and other green features a lot more seriously. The latest evidence came earlier this week when KB Home, one of the top five U.S. homebuilders, announced that all of its new developments in Northern California would be built to GreenPoint Rated standards, a green building rating system developed by Berkeley, Calif.-based Build It Green that grades homes based on energy efficiency, water and resource conservation, indoor air quality and more. “The early adopters were custom builders who championed the [GreenPoint Rated] standard,” David Myers, Build It Green’s communications and development manager, told us. “Now we’re seeing it move into the mainstream.”

The announcement marks the first commitment by a major homebuilder to construct all its homes in a region to the GreenPoint Rated standard, an important validation for the nonprofit that was established in 2004 (so far more than 10,000 single- and multi-family homes in California and Nevada have been or are being built to meet Build It Green’s green building criteria). But more importantly, the move shows that giant homebuilders are beginning to believe that there are enough mainstream buyers interested in green to warrant a shift toward building homes with features like highly insulated windows and walls and the use of recycled materials.

“Consumers want homes that will save them money in operations and that are green,” KB Home spokesman Craig LeMessurier, told us. “The two go hand in hand.” Over the last three years, KB Home has built about 1,100-1,200 new homes in Northern California, and the company operates in 11 U.S. states. LeMessurier wouldn’t say if the company might expand the commitment to other regions, nor would he say if the new green homes in Northern California would cost more to build than conventional construction. If there is a premium passed to buyers, however, KB Home clearly believes it can win over customers with lower energy and water bills and the marketing power of green.

KB Home isn’t alone in its shift, albeit still slow, to green building. Miami-based Lennar, a leading U.S. builder, has unveiled a line of green homes called PowerSmart Homes that are designed to save up to 40 percent on energy use. The company says it aims to have all its new homes in Minnesota achieve its PowerSmart criteria. Pulte Homes, which calls itself the nation’s largest homebuilder, is increasingly focused on adding green features to its structures and last year won the U.S. Green Building Council’s “Outstanding Production Builder” award for its Villa Trieste project in Las Vegas, which includes 185 single-family homes that met the council’s highest standard, LEED Platinum.

The announcement by KB Home is also noteworthy because the company chose to hang its hat on an independent rating system, in this case Build It Green, rather than brand its homes green based on in-house criteria. GreenPoint Rated, like LEED, depends on third-party verification and that means KB Home’s structures in Northern California will have to show that they’ve been built to standards developed by independent experts.

More homebuilders in the United States, especially the largest ones, are including green features in their standard packages as buyers demand energy efficiency.

This week, Miami-based Lennar announced plans to offer its new PowerSmartSM Homes in all 16 states where it builds, beginning in Minnesota. These homes, designed to cut energy use 40%, will include efficient heating, cooling, lighting, appliances and windows. They'll come with the government's Energy Star label and the Department of Energy's efficiency score.

"Prospective buyers are eco-conscious and truly embrace energy-efficient products even in this current economic climate," Bill Burgess, president of Lennar's Minnesota region, said in a statement.

Like Lennar, other large homebuilders -- notably Beazer Homes, KB Home and Pulte Homes -- are turning a green leaf as eco-features such as efficient appliances become common and studies show green homes sell more quickly and at higher prices

Small start-ups, too, are pitching green packages. On Friday, at the New Hampshire State Home Show in Manchester, the evo Home will be unveiled. The product of three New Hampshire companies, it aims to offer affordable, eco-friendly homes without the hassles of custom building.

"This is the right product for the right time," co-founder James Bruss of Bruss Construction, told seacoastonline.com. Bruss said despite the weak economy, his firm built more green homes last year than at any time in the firm's 25-year history. He wants to simplify the process.

"Building your dream home doesn't have to be a nightmare of endless meetings, cost overruns, constant pressure for decisions and compromises of quality to stay within budget," he said in the story.

Evo Homes will offer solar water heating, Energy Star lighting and appliances as well as certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program. They'll range in size from 1,600 square feet to 2,800 square feet and in cost from $300,000 to $600,000.

The nation's largest homebuilders are continuing their efforts to offer greener products:

KB Home announced this week that all of its new home communities in Northern California will meet the energy efficiency standards of Build It Green, a non-profit California-based rating program, which it says is more stringent than Energy Star.

Nationwide, the Environmental Protection Agency has honored KB Home for its commitment to building Energy Star homes. Last year, the company says more than 60% of its new homes qualified for the Energy Star label.

In January, Beazer Homes said all its new homes would include additional air sealing, insulation and energy-efficient windows -- at no additional cost to buyers. Its eSmart homes also come with a home energy monitor, programmable thermostat, compact fluorescent light bulbs and Energy Star products.

"Now more than ever, home buyers are looking for ways to save money on long-term energy and maintenance costs," Ian McCarthy, president and CEO of Beazer Homes, said in the announcement. "Our eSMART homes are a direct response to what our customers have told us is most important."

Pulte Homes recently won the U.S. Green Building Council's 2009 production builder award, which noted its Villa Trieste development in Las Vegas, which includes rooftop solar panels.

Pulte says many of its homes in 29 states include energy-efficient features such as smart thermostats, blown-in insulation, low-emissive windows, tight construction, high efficiency toilets and Energy Star appliances.

New Ballot Initiative Threatens California's Pioneering Environmental Policy

A proposed 2010 ballot measure, the “California Jobs Initiative” would dismantle the environmental progress California has made over the last decade in one fell swoop. The initiative proposes to suspend the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32) until the state’s unemployment level falls below 5.5%. Since the unemployment rate for the entire nation now surpasses 9% and California’s remains above 12%, this provision would effectively kill AB 32. Assemblyman Dan Logue, the author of the initiative, claims that AB 32 is stymieing employment in California, and that its removal would reinstate jobs. The logic behind this assumption is deeply flawed, as none of the factors that lead to the national recession were caused by environmental policies. On January 12, 2010, the Building Standards Commission approved a revised California Green Building Code. The Bay Area Public Agency Council represents the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area, as well as Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. Build It Green's Bay Area PAC meets quarterly at varying locations around the Bay Area to accomodate participants from all regions. Participation in the Bay Area PAC is not limited to Public Agency representatives from Northern California, however, presentations and updates given during the meetings are applicable to the region. Depending on outside funding sources and the availability of local host agencies, a $20 fee per council meeting applies. Please check the individual meeting postings as the fee changes from meeting to meeting. Build It Green strives to make these meetings available free of charge to everyone, but this is not always possible. Advanced registration is required and encouraged as most of the training courses sell out well in advance. We are now proud to offer “Early Bird” registration to our professional training events in 2010!
