Event Description

Topic:  Insulation

Description:  Insulation is probably the most under-appreciated component of our buildings and is treated as an almost afterthought by many contractors and designers. Yet - in the face of all the many high tech, expensive energy efficiency options  - insulation is the most important component and variable in making our buildings safe, healthy, comfortable and durable - and able to operate at the lowest cost possible.

If we are ever going to get serious about energy efficiency in the this country, we are going to have do a much better job of insulating our buildings.  And it's not that hard to do!  But it means doing a better job of not only installing insulation, but also planning and designing for insulation.  We'll talk about an all too common example of how not to do it, and then look at the gold standard for how to put together a well insulated building:  the Passive House.  Although not all buildings are going to be a Passive House, the principles behind it are applicable to all buildings to a greater or lesser degree.
