Topic:  Successful Building Models for Green Building (Panel)
 
Description:
Wondering what others in the construction and real estate industries are doing to help their businesses excel in these rough times? We'll provide samples of alternative business models and and show you how some companies have adapted to today’s market by changing their vision.
 
A panel of six business leaders from various industries (product supplier, architect, construction, manufacturing, consulting, and trades) will share their insights and compare business models pre and post 2008.

Biography

Facilitator:  Linda Delair
Linda will provide a background of her business and the ongoing developments that have challenged her for the past number of years.
 
Linda Delair - Green Business and Residential Consultant, San Rafael, CA
 
Linda is a LEED AP, a CGBP and ACGBP  and has an AA degree from the Community College of Rhode Island, and is currently study Green Building Science at San Francisco Institute of Architecture.
She is a graduate of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute, the Landmark Education Curriculum for Living Program, the Environmental Forum of Marin’s Master Class, and BTB School of Feng Shui, along with being a facilitator of the Pachamama Alliance’s Awakening The Dreamer Initiative.
 
She has been in the interior design world for almost two decades and has recently facilitated “green” home and business makeovers. Her client Clough Construction, was awarded “Best Deck and Fencing Company 2010-2011” by the readers of Pacific Sun. Linda is also the project administrator for a LEED CI dental building in Sonoma County.

Ericka Jennings – Chief Executive Officer
Ericka Jennings is CEO of Green Key Real Estate and a real estate agent practicing in the larger Bay Area. As an EcoBroker® and Certified Green Building Professional, Ericka brings her extensive knowledge of green building practices to every transaction. Viewing the home as a whole system has greatly influenced how she does business -- from advising clients on what green repairs and improvements they can make and the value they hold, to collaborating with other agents and green vendors to support the transaction.
 
Ericka obtained a Masters in Business degree from San Diego State University with a focus on Entrepreneurship & Social Responsibility. There she wrote a thesis entitled Seed to Blossom: Planning for a Socially Responsible Business, in which she interviewed owners and managers about best practices and business planning in the emerging social entrepreneurial scene.
Ericka believes that through personal effort and conscious decisions, we can truly impact our environment in positive ways.

Colleen Mahoney, AIA - Principal, NEST ARCHITECTURE STUDIO, Sausalito, CA
Colleen Mahoney is a fourth generation Californian.  She grew up on a working ranch in Sonoma County where she learned first hand to work with nature, to support local farmers and ranchers, and she developed a keen awareness about preserving our environment at an early age.  While still in high school Colleen volunteered in a campaign to create urban growth boundaries to stop sprawl around Petaluma.  Colleen was friendly with the Kortum family and followed Dr. Kortum's fight to keep a nuclear reactor from being located at Bodega Bay.

Colleen has always been active in preservation of our planet and finds her commitment to sustainable design and architecture an extension of herself.  Colleen has a degree in Architecture from Cal, and has been a licensed architect for over 25 years.  Her work has been recognized by many organizations including a "Design the Future" award from Build It Green.  Colleen is a CGBP and Green Point Rater.  The National Association of Professional Women named Colleen Professional Woman of the year for 2011.  

In June of this year Colleen stepped away from her firm Mahoney Architects & Interiors and created a new company with partners: Nest Architecture located in Sausalito.  The firm is focused on designing sustainable spaces for families. 
 
Denise Bellas, LEED AP - A&D Market Manager, Smith and Fong, Product Manufacturing
Denise Bellas is the Architectural and Design Market Manager for Smith and Fong.  She was hired by Smith and Fong in 2008 to be the lesion between the design community and the trades.  She brought over 10 years experience in the green industry and 20 years experience in the commercial interiors world. Denise’s scope of experience ranges from residential design to working on interior product applications, specification, product selection and space planning for companies that include Kaiser, Google, UCSF and other corporate clientele as well.

Her role at Smith and Fong is additionally to oversee California sales and distribution.  She is a LEED Accredited Professional thru the USGBC and is certified as a Green Building Professional thru Build It Green.  Denise has worked with cities and communities such as Sustainable San Rafael and with the City of San Rafael as a green building advisor.
 
Carter Welch - Mendocino Forest Products, Product Distribution
Ad Age “Marketing 100” award-winning senior marketing and sales executive. Currently, leading marketing for Mendocino Forest Products, a privately held California company. Previously, selected by several of world’s leading marketers (including Procter and Gamble, Pillsbury, Kodak, Chicken of the Sea) to develop and lead ground-breaking marketing and product initiatives as employee or consultant. Successes include turning around declining brand franchises, launching innovative new products, and creating market leaders in multiple categories. Responsible for over $100 million in product and service sales growth.

Thom Harrington - CoFounder, Woodshanti Cooperative, Trade: Cabinetry
AlterECO was founded by Thom Harrison in 1997 after he got an eye-opening education in the then fledgling concepts of ecological design, green building and conscious business practices through a cutting-edge ecological design program at San Francisco Institute of Architecture and as an early member of  a consensus-based natural building enterprise called Vital Systems—still alive and well in Ukiah. Thom had a lifetime of experience in the construction industry, having grown-up in his father’s custom cast stone business in Virginia—working in every capacity: from casting molds to running marketing and business operations as vice president. A degree in Building Construction at Virginia Tech.
 
But it was the discovery of ecological design at SFIA and working with bamboo and other green materials at Vital Systems that really stirred Thom's interest and inspired the creation of AlterECO, focused since its founding on modern bamboo cabinetry and select custom furnishings.
 
Since AlterECO's inception, Thom has been President and Chief Designer as well as holding down a number of other roles--as the times have required. We are now in one of those times--since the economic downturn--when Thom is wearing many hats, as he seeks creative solutions to the challenges of the "new normal": "certain uncertainty" while staying true to core values.
