Description: Transforming our physical and institutional infrastructure to support rather than threaten global, regional, community, and household sustainability is a daunting task. The issue is not whether
deep energy reductions are necessary, but how to define and support this vision. The Thousand Home Challenge is designed to catalyze this transformation.
The goal of the Thousand Home Challenge is to demonstrate the potential to reduce total annual site energy consumption of existing North American homes by 70-90%. These reductions will be achieved through a combination of energy efficiency, renewable resources, community-based solutions, and behavioral choices.
Living Building Challenge is one of the most sustainable building certification systems being used. It combines requirements for non-toxic materials, zero water, zero energy, habitat restoration, and equity issues, among others. If the building meets all of the criteria, the building is certified after a year of testing. If it does not meet the requirements, the building is not certified. It is simple and clear. There are no points to play with, just the requirements. If we are to build truly sustainable buildings, then this is one way we can reliably build them now. Learn about the issues they require, and learn if there are ways you can incorporate at least some of them in your next project.
