Event Notes:

Topic:  Earthships & Sustainability as Scientific Method

Description:  Earthships and Sustainability as Scientific Method is the firsthand account of a core Earthship builder and the discovery that “sustainability” is not only a method of home design, but also a philosophy and science to live by.

In this presentation, people will learn the inner workings of an Earthship home/structure from site selection to finish material choices, the trials and tribulations of alternative architecture planning, and the integral links between sustainable architecture and social wellbeing.  Join the journey of an anthropologist turned dirt herder, turned tire pounder, turned (the first) Sustainologist, turned CEO of Terrassure Corporation.

Speaker Information:

Ari Maslow was a core Earthship builder from 1994-1997 and worked on over 20 different Earthship structures in three states. During his experience as a crew member, Ari lived in the experimental buildings of the “Castle Compound” on the Taos mesa. In 1996 after combining his knowledge of off-grid construction, and his anthropological and mathematical discovery, Ari Maslow coined himself as the first Sustainologist in history, dedicating himself to the education and practical applications of sustainable development.

After 3.5 years of off-grid living and construction, Ari returned to his home in Marin county and formed a green building and Earthship consultation company called DNA EcoStructures. Shortly thereafter in 1999, Ari partnered with Jonah Reynolds (son of Michael Reynolds (Earthship inventor)) to form Earthship Global Operations LLC and Sustainable Solutions 5013b(Not For Profit) in Fairfax California. At the time, there were 20,000 requests for Earthships in California. The problem was that there were no building codes to support Earthship construction. In 2002 Earthship Global and Sustainable Solutions closed its doors.

Since 2004 Ari has reopened his business as Maslow Consulting and Terrassure Corporation to fulfill the tidal-wave of interest in sustainability. It is now a common held understanding that sustainability can be applied as a mathematical formula. Ari M. Maslow has the equation, and it started with building homes out of trash.
