The Certified Green Building Professional (CGBP) program was launched in 2003 and has certified over 1000 building professionals as of November 2007. In order for the program to maintain strong credibility in the marketplace and ensure that CGBPs are current with the latest advances in green building, recertification is required every other year. All Certified Green Building Professionals must comply with the recertification criteria outlined below to maintain certification status.

Requirements

Recertification every two years

The CGBP certification is valid for two years from issuance of the original certification with a 60 day grace period during which recertification applications must be received. If you do not apply for recertification:

• Your CGBP status will be suspended.
• Your contact information will be removed from the CGBP Directory.
• You may be reinstated if you recertify within one year of your certification expiration. After that time, you must retake the CGBP Training in order to be relisted.

Build It Green will remind CGBPs annually of their recertification due date. A $50.00 recertification application fee covers ongoing administrative costs.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

To achieve recertification, you must obtain 16 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over the course of 2 years from your recertification date. At least 2 CEUs must be earned in each of these subject areas:

• Energy/Building Science (renewable energy, energy efficiency, weatherproofing, insulation, building technology, mechanical systems, daylighting)
• Materials/Indoor Air Quality (structural systems, green materials, recycling, C&D waste diversion, indoor air quality)
• Site/Landscaping/Water (site selection, land development, stormwater control, landscaping, rainwater collection, water conservation, plumbing)

Building professionals are responsible for keeping track of their earned CEUs and must provide verification of attendance from the instructor or educational institution by submitting a Continuing Education Unit Form that describes and details CEUs attained.

Pre-Approved CEUs

Selected training, classes, and seminars have been pre-approved by the Build It Green Education Committee for attaining the required CEUs. The list is not exhaustive and is provided to show typical options that will be considered to satisfy the CEU requirements. View the Approved CEU List for Recertification. Unless otherwise noted on the approved CEU list, one CEU credit is earned for every hour of approved continuing education attended.

• Advanced Training: Build It Green will offer at least two Advanced Training classes each year that expand on the basic Certified Green Building Professional Class.
• Green Building Professionals Guild:Guild meetings are approved for 1.5 CEUs per meeting. If you have questions regarding your Guild attendance record, please email the Guild or call 510-845-0472 ext. 112.

Non Pre-Approved CEUs

Look for in-depth educational opportunities that go beyond the basics covered by the Certified Green Building Professional training, as Build It Green will not accept CEUs for basic level green building classes. If an unlisted class warrants consideration as an approved CEU, we strongly encourage you to submit your request at least two weeks in advance of the class date to ensure that you earn credit where anticipated. Not all green building classes will be approved for the CEU requirement. Please submit your request by using the Continuing Education Unit Form.

Apply for recertification

Recertification applications are due within 60 days of the two year anniversary of the original certification.

1. Submit a Recertification Application with recertification payment fee of $50.00.
2. Fill out a Continuing Education Unit Form for all classes/courses/workshops taken.
3. Make checks payable to Build It Green or pay by Visa or MasterCard (see application). Note: online recertification payment is not currently available.
