To become a GreenPoint Rated Advisor or Rater, you must demonstrate education in green building and professional experience appropriate to the certification you are seeking. Once you have demonstrated your eligibility by
applying for training, your next step will be to take Build It Green’s “GreenPoint Rated Core”. Please see the matrix below for specific eligibility requirements related to your preferred certification.

GreenPoint Rated Core
To achieve a GreenPoint Rated certification, the first step is to take Build It Green’s “GreenPoint Rated Core” training. You must meet the requirements for a New Home Advisor/Rater or an Existing Home Advisor in order to take this training.
“GreenPoint Rated Core” is not required for current GreenPoint Rated Advisors and Raters.
Green Building Education
ONE of the following:

Build It Green's Certified Green Building Professional

NAHB Research Center’s National Green Building Certification Program

U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Accredited Professional (LEED-AP)

U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Green Associate

Green Globe Certification

Green building certificate from an institution of higher learning
Building Professional License or Certification
ONE of the following:

Licensed General Contractor (California)

Licensed Architect or Engineer (California)

Certified ASHI/CREIA Inspector

International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector certification

California Office of Real Estate Appraisers (OREA) Real Estate Appraiser Residential License or better (AL, AR, AG)

California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC) Energy Analyst certification

Other comparable license, degree, or certification or four years mastery level experience in residential construction documented through petition option*
Building Performance
ONE of the following, AND (for Existing Home Single Family and Multifamily Raters only) at least four (4) field tests completed in either blower door or duct leakage:

Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst

California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA) certificate of completion for Home Performance with Energy Star course, Levels 1 & 2

Existing Home (Single Family) Rater only: Build It Green’s “Basic Package Technical Training for Energy Upgrade California”

Existing Home (Single Family) Rater only: Build It Green’s “Understanding the Whole House Approach”

Completion of other home performance training including duct testing and envelope evaluation to be submitted via petition option*
Multifamily Experience
To become a GreenPoint Rated Existing Home Multifamily Rater or Advisor, you must attest to your design, construction, evaluation, retrofitting and/or operations experience within multifamily buildings.
* Petition Procedure
Your petition must demonstrate in writing the equivalent of 4 years mastery level experience in new home construction or existing home retrofit and remodel. Please submit ALL of the following:

Letter from a credentialed colleague or former manager attesting to your employment or achievements
