Job Opening: Development Manager
Build It Green is a professional non-profit membership organization whose mission is to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient residential building practices in California. Supported by a solid foundation of outreach and education, Build It Green connects consumers and building professionals with the tools and technical expertise they need to build quality green buildings.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Time will be divided between sponsorship solicitation; stewardship of existing sponsors; supporting Development Director and Board/Staff Fundraising Committee; development planning, budgeting, and tracking; foundation and grant proposal research and writing; and managing the Development Associate (Councils & Guilds) and Program Assistant (Membership & Events). The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:
1. Working with Development Director, Executive Director, and Board/Staff Fundraising Committee, solicit, cultivate, and steward successful corporate sponsor relationships, resulting in increased sponsorship revenue.
2. Create and implement annual member recruitment campaign. Work with Board/Staff Fundraising Committee to evaluate, design, and implement Individual Giving Program.
3. Maintain effective member and sponsor tracking and communication systems.
4. Build and maintain strong relationships with members, sponsors, Board of Directors, potential and existing funders and grantors, and partner organizations.
5. Assist Development Director with foundation and grant proposal research and writing. Compile and analyze data for fulfillment of funding requirements, such as data tracking, evaluation, and reporting.
6. Work closely with other Program Managers to support and enhance all programs. Work with Professional Training Program Manager to coordinate and administer membership incentives for training attendees and sponsor benefits for Professional Training sponsors. Work with Green Home Tour Program Manager to coordinate and administer sponsor benefits for Home Tour sponsors.
7. Perform all internal organizational duties associated with management of Membership, Sponsorship, and Councils & Guilds, including budgeting, strategic planning, evaluation, and reporting.
8. Manage and support Development Associate responsible for coordinating Build It Green’s Council & Guild network. Supervise DA’s workflow (which includes meeting scheduling and invitations, steering committee coordination, speaker procurement, coordination of CEU assignments, monthly newsletter, etc.)
9. Manage and support Program Assistant for Membership & Events. Supervise PA’s workflow (which includes membership processing, status tracking, coordination with bookkeeper, membership renewals, administration of membership benefits, member services, Green Home Tour Guidebook ad sales, event coordination, meeting preparation and logistics, etc.)
10. Assist fellow Build It Green staff on all programs as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
1. 5-10 years non-profit development experience, including a broad understanding of best practices in fundraising. Specific experience with membership management, corporate sponsorship, foundation grants, corporate social responsibility, and individual giving is highly desirable.
2. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to manage professional relationships. Proficient written and verbal and communication skills. Ability to confidently articulate organizational mission and vision, extemporaneously describe complex program functions, and demonstrate understanding of value proposition of green building to numerous varied constituents.
3. Proven organizational skills. Event coordination, budgeting, project management and planning skills are required.
4. Self-sufficient office skills: ability to work with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Windows operating systems required. Experience with web-based email marketing systems, donor databases, CiviCRM (or other customer relationship management software), and MS Project is preferred.
5. Sound experience in budget planning and management.
6. Friendly, outgoing temperament and an eagerness to serve Build It Green stakeholders and the public interest.
7. A proven commitment to addressing a variety of environmental and public health issues through green building, and/or an appetite to learn more about this rapidly evolving field.
8. General understanding of green building practices and principles, and the ability to articulate the environmental, health, and economic benefits of green building.
EDUCATION AND BACKGROUND
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university degree in related field AND 5-10 years of progressively increasing responsibility performing high-level development functions in the non-profit sector.
